"VSNL" BAND WIDTH AT DELHI (The Economic Times - 1-12-2000) Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd has successfully commissioned international internet bandwidth of 155 Mbps at its Delhi gateway. The gateway now has a total bandwidth capacity of 211 mb. With the Delhi gateway having a new stream of 155 mb, VSNL's total international bandwidth today stands at 775 mb. FAST-TRACK COURTS (The Pioneer - 2-12-2000) In a major move to decongest jail population in the country, the Central Government is setting up 1,734 fast track additional courts with effect from April 1, 2001. These fast track additional courts would dispose of 20 lakh cases in a period of four years from the total 2.4 crore cases pending in district and subordinate courts in the country. UNIDO, PVT SECTOR TO JOIN HANDS FOR DEVELOPMENT (The Economic Times - 2-12-2000) The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), as a part of its strategy to reorganise its activities in India, is looking towards extending its cooperation with the private sector in the country. |
The organisation is formulating a country specific programme, better known as Country Service Framework, and it intends to incorporate the private sectors views in addition to those of the government and the intelligensia. According to UNIDO Director general, the private sector is extremely dynamic and UNIDO will like to increase its cooperation with this sector to attract FDI to India. He added that though UNIDO will help create more jobs, it would not be enough. We need to crate more enterprises and more enterpreneurs to ensure that the population is connected with the global economy. The statement added that the private sector would be a major driving force for formulation of a Country Service Framework. EXPORTS GROW BY OVER 20 PC (The Indian Express - 2-12-2000) India's exports continued to grow by over 20 per cent between April and October this year as against the corresponding period last year, but could maintain the tempo achieved in the first half of the current financial year. The trade deficit for April-October 2000-01 is estimated at $5256.28 million, which is lower then the $5795.56 million during the same period last year. INDIAN IT FIRM TO SET UP SOFTWARE CENTRE IN SINGAPORE (The Hindustan Times - 3-12-2000) Delhi-Based AP Technosis Ltd, an Application Service Provider (ASP), B2B and B2C company, has decided to set up a software development center in Singapore. The center, which will be functional from early next month, will mark the foray of the company into the Southeast Asian market in a big way. AP Technosis physical presence in Singapore would help us to strengthen our base in South East Asian market and will be able to generate more business from this base PUNJAB AGRO TO SET UP 3 FOOD PARKS (The Economic Times - 4-12-2000) The Punjab Agro Industries Corporation (PAIC) is to set up three food parks in the state involving an investment of Rs. 60 crore. Besides this, PAIC would also set up four food and vegetables processing projects at a cost of Rs. 40 crore. Theses would process 40,000 tonnes of vegetables and fruits. |
KDA GETS A+ RATING (The Economic Times - 4-12-2000) The Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) has become the first Uttar Pradesh government organisation to get a A+(SO) rating its bonds issue of Rs 50 crore by ICRA. KDA is the first city development authority in India to get this rating in its bonds, that too without the support of a state government guarantee, which makes it ever more creditable. The Rs 50 crore bond issue launched in the middle of December with the help of merchant bankers SBI Capital Markets Ltd and R R Financial Consultants Ltd,. The A+ rating will enable KDA to raise funds at a more financial benefits by way of saving on high interest cost. TOTAL E-GOVERNANCE BY 2005 IN HARYANA (The Economic Times - 4-12-2000) The Haryana State Electronics Development Corporation (Hartron) has been assigned a time-bound sensitive task of preparing the state for total e-governance by end 2005. As a prelude to this, the Centre has formally okayed northern India's first Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) at Gurgaon, to commence various courses. A corpus of Rs 10 crore has been set apart for this purpose by the State. The IIIT would be managed by an autonomous body with the Haryana Government, Hartron, and leading Indian and foreign IT MNCs, as co-promoters. The IIIT would have the status of a deemed university and would offer |
undergraduate, post-graduate and short-term certificate IT courses. Hartron is further tying up with leading IT companies to provide state-of-the-art solutions in niche areas of decision-making by various government departments, boards and corporation. BENGAL TO SET UP JEWELLERY PARK (The Economic Times - 5-12-2000) West Bengal is setting up the state's first gems and jewellery export park. Encouraged by trade inquiries from Italy and Israel, the West Bengal government has earmarked four acres of land for the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) to build and export park at Salt Lake. The park would accommodate more than 100 export houses and is expected to create jobs for about 20,000 skilled and semi-skilled worker. The park world have a one-window service, a jewellery museum and designing workshops, besides housing more than 100 business establishments. The state government hopes that once the park is built, eastern India's export figures could go up three times in five years. GENETICALLY DEVELOPED POTATO IN MARKET (The Hindu - 9-12-2000) A genetically engineered variety of potato that will be rich in protein is likely to be available in the market soon. Scientists have already conducted the necessary tests and are ready for filed trials. The new biotech potato assumes importance as the existing varieties have negligible concentration of protein. |
The new variety, being developed by scientists at the National Centre for Plant Genome Research (NCPGR) is expected to have a 14 per cent protein content. TAX COLLECTIN UP 17.6 P.C. (The Hindu - 9-12-2000) Total collections of all direct and indirect taxes during April-November have reached Rs. 107,261.01 crores, compared Rs. 91,228.52 crores in the corresponding period last years an increases of 17.57 per cent. In this , direct taxes accounted for Rs. 31,947 crores against Rs. 22,592.05 crores, thereby registering an increase of 41.53 per cent. Corporation tax collections were placed at Rs. 14,862.58 crores, working out to 37.53 per cent rise. Excise collections during the period under reference amounted to Rs. l41,926.98 crores, up from Rs. 36,882.09 crores. However, customs collections remain poor, with total collections during the eight month period being Rs. 31,107.48 croes, up 4.03 per cent from Rs 29,903.35 crores. Total indirect tax collections, therefore, stood at Rs. 75,286.41 crores up to November, up by 9.69 per cent from Rs. 68,636.47 crores. For November, income-tax collections stood at Rs. 1,967,55 crores, up 55.96 per cent over Rs. 1,261.56 crores collected in November 1999. Corporation tax collections were placed at Rs. 607.64 crores, up 62.69 per cent from Rs. 373.49 crores in the same month last year. MCD DEVELOPING UNIQUE HERBAL GARDEN (The Hindustan Times - 11-12-2000) The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is developing a unique herbal garden on a six-acre site on the Ring Road. In its step towards a greener city, the corporation is also proposing to restore historical gardens like Roshnara Bagh and Qudsia Bagh with the help of INTACH. The garden which already houses over 100 species of plants and trees will take full shape in about a year's time. The plants, trees and shrubs in this garden have medicinal, cosmetic and aromatic value. The herbal garden project is the first of its kind taken up in North India and will especially be beneficial to the public and school children who will be able to better appreciate the value of the vegetation growing around them. Some of the common varieties of plants like Champa, Ashoka and Kadamba trees are existing in the garden. The trees like Arjun used for heart ailments, vitamin-C rich amla used widely in Ayurvedic preparations, citrus trees, shisham and medicinal shrubs like tulsi, brahmi and shankhpushpi will be grown in the garden. |
TAKING INTERNET TO RURAL AREAS (The Hindu - 13-12-2000) The Haryana Gvoernment announced its Right of Way (RoW) Policy and Agreement to provide a communication backbone for encouraging distance education through Information Technology tools and to take Internet to the rural areas. The policy seeks to facilitate private domain initiative in e-transition of Haryana by providing critical infrastructure, system framework and enabling environment. It also encourages distance education through use of information technology tools, information technology-enabled services for providing large-scale employment and also to take Internet to the villages at the earliest to spur economic growth in rural areas and to ensure that the benefits of technology percolate down to the masses. Encouraged by the response received from the students community, action has been initiated for the development of a website containing data pertaining to air, water and solid waste collected by the school children from different parts of Delhi as part of the Community Adoption and Monitoring Programmes for School (CAMPS). To ensure larger participation of the students, ten selected schools are being provided with latest computers along with connections to facilitate the work. The students would update the website daily on the basis samples of air, water and solid wastes collected by them from the neighbouring communities. | highways and 44 state highways will be covered in the "route". GAIL will use state-of -the-art technology to ensure minimum disturbance to traffic and normal life. Horizontal direction drilling (HDD) would be utilized to cross Yamuna river. The initial capacity of the pipeline will be 1.7 million metric tones per annum (MMTPA), which might be enhanced to 2.5 MMTPA later. The daily supply through the pipe would be equivalent to five lakh LPG cylinders. LPG was taken to GAIL's Jamnagar terminal on August 15 this year. Envisaged in 1997 by GAIL, this Rs 1229.45 crore project has been completed ahead of schedule. It was proposed that LPG would be transported from the western region to northern state. The project was approved by the Cabinet panel on Oct 29,'97. The work on the project started in October and took less than one year to complete. |
