March 16
Six people, including an Additional District Magistrate are killed in a clash between the police and the crowd protesting against the alleged burning of the Holy Quran in Kanpur.
The President, Mr. K.R. Narayanan honours the former South African President, Mr. Nelson Mandela, with the Gandhi Peace Prize.
March 17
Eleven people, including two policemen, have been killed and four injured in an encounter between police and the supporters of Rashtriya Janata Dal MP, Shahabuddin in Siwan District of Bihar.
INS Tillanchang, the second indigenous warship in the Trinkat class fast attack craft series commissioned at the naval base of Vishakhapatnam.
